'How to smoke a cigarette indoors without getting caught?'

I just came across this outrageous article, entitled How to Smoke a Cigarette Indoors Without Getting Caught? The title explains it all: the article lays out the procedure and tips to avoid getting caught whilst smoking indoors. The article was published in none other than the famous and frequented website wikiHow.

smoke-indoors.jpgA quick description of what the article's advice is needs to be put forward here to show how much it goes into details to provide a solution to this 'serious dilemma'. The smell is the most obvious factor when detecting if someone is smoking, and eliminating the smell to the maximum is what the article focuses on.

So first of all, you need to get an empty toilet paper roll. The article even goes in detail regarding this first step, by advising - in the article's own words - that 'you don't need the toilet paper for this so it's best to wait until you have an empty roll rather than deal with the toilet paper still on the roll […].' The next step is to take 3 to 4 scented wet wipes and place them inside the toilet roll. Then, smoking can start but always making sure you blow all the smoke into one of the roll's openings. The wet wipes will absorb the smoke and thus its smell. The finali: impregnate your room, or the place you've smoked in, with some nice air freshener.

Can you believe this? What should one think about this? That someone is out there for us to give us some tips on how to smoke peacefully without getting paranoid?? The ban on smoking indoors may cause some annoyance to smokers, but these bans are the result of a simple logic: while smoking is something you can choose to do, breathing is not. So forcing people to breathe air affected by smoke is simply not fair. This article just goes one step too far in trying to circumvent this basic logic, and it is just very sad to see that some people will do everything to satisfy their nicotine urge. Even though the article suggests - very indirectly - that this is taking place in a private space, it does help people get ideas on how to do this in public places, or workplaces.

I do not understand the morals of the people who come up with these stupid ideas. I have teenage nieces and as far as I am aware they do not smoke, but if they did and were looking for tips on how to do it without being caught then the advice is there for the taking.

I used to be a smoker but I am now reformed and an ardent reformer. Smoking Kills, it is that simple and we should do everything possible to get people away from the habit.

I really hate these 'reformed' ex smokers....give us smokers a break, it is up to us if we smoke, and the pressure to give up and being 'cast out' is becoming stupid. Just leave us alone and let us make our own choices in life!

It's not the article that's a problem, it's you non-smokers making smokers feel like they should be ashamed of themselves and go into hiding so that we have to resort to such ridiculous and desperate measures. Every public place is designed according to non-smokers, so give us a freaking break and let us smoke in our own damn house! Agreed with above: it is our own choice so leave us alone.

I think it is digusting that people can still smoke in public places. It is about time they banned it completely. It kills, can you not get that into your heads. It smells, and is totally antisocial. Why should us non smokers have to tollerate you smokers.

How is smoking antisocial? That's just a stupid thing to say, because smoking is actually very social. And don't think this is coming from some ciggaddicted person, I don't smoke. But that little comment just pissed me off for some effed up reason.

We smokers know and understand the dangers of smoking... We are not ignorant children who cannot read or watch television. Its our choice to smoke. Non smokers shouldn't complain about having to "tolerate" us because the amount of smokers has dropped. We as smokers are now forced to hide and smoke because of ignorant non-smokers who complain and send us hate. Its our lifestyle choice and its not going to end the world if we have a smoke... Maybe if everyone was a little less hostile toward us we wouldnt have to hide the fact that we smoke

First, I am a smoker. Second, people who smoke (non socially) have their reasons, its our crutch, non smokers have their crutches as well, like people who need coffee in the morning to get going, your cup of coffee is my cig, I don't see y people dont just leave smokers alone.

If we want to smoke we can smoke. It is our life and we can do what we see fit in it. AT LEAST WE DONT SMOKE CRACK! Who cares if it kills that happens in like 50 years. People go and walk out on the streets with concealed weapons and the business establishments are focusing more on smoking then dealing with shootings. Its just a plant, and is being frowned upon just like marijuana. It is a naturally occuring substance and we can smoke it, we just cant smoke it in a restaurant (referring to cigarettes). In our country, which claims to be a free country, are slowly and surely limiting its population to what they can or cant do. Sooner or later we are going to be no better then a communist controlled country because government wants their people to live a certain way. No wonder emmigration rates are getting higher and higher. We cant be condemned for the choices we make and we sure as hell wont let that happen.

Is smoking out of a toilet paper roll less conspicuous than just smoking a cigarette? Last time I checked, it wasn't, so how is this article in any way implying that you should do this in a public place? The wikihow article is aimed towards teenagers who smoke in their parents' houses, which are private, not public, places. Oh, and hold your breath if you're near a smoker, or, better yet, walk away. I don't get offended each time someone else's actions affect my own, because that's how the world works. Thinking that you can "fix" everything you don't like about other people is immature at best.

You do realise it's not intended for public spaces, but rather residential places where people are not allowed to smoke because of parents, relatives or room-mates, and it may be too cold to smoke outside?
Please read articles before being outraged about nothing.

The article was clearly talking about smoking pot masked by the title of a cigarette. Cigarettes obviously give off their own smoke which could not be filtered in any such way. I suppose that's why It's a secretive way.

Can I just take a moment to point out that boomer is spot on? The paper towel roll is called a sploof, it's to mask the scent of pot. It wouldn't even work with a cigarette anyway, since the paper causes a cig to constantly burn thus producing constant smoke. Whereas, when you smoke pot it's possible to do it via bowl which can be covered.

Not that I'm condoning the usage of pot, just wanted to set the record straight. I recently switched to an E-cigarette because I have to walk down three flights of stairs every time I need a nic fix. I agree with the above comments, we should be able to smoke in our own living spaces.

Alternatively, I can agree that out of mutual respect public places (AE:Food joints, malls, ect) should remain non-smoking.
